Limited and unhelpful support

I have struggled with hoarding for years. I was offered greenfields mental health case worker to come over to remove stuff, but I refused entry because even through conversation there was a clear disrespect for my things and an urge on her part to take control. My hoarding began as a way to experience control after stressful life events. I was offered CBT but the therapist didn't allow me to express my feelings which I didn't find helpful. I have been tackling the hoard myself using a self help book for hoarding which has allowed to to remove over 1000 items at my own pace and in control but there is still so much to do. I was also offered a paid for service where someone comes in to help but this was financially not possible for me.

There needs to be more practical help that's free, non judgemental and allows the person to stay in control while encouraging them to meet home safety criteria and other goals.

Hello Thank you for getting in touch and sharing. It is really important and useful to hear about your lived experiences - we want to understand what helps, what doesn't and why from people who have accessed support around hoarding behaviour. This information really helps to inform discussions and shape future services. What is the name of the book is that you have found useful (we can share this with others who may find it useful)? Please contact beth.hadnum@staffordshire.gov.uk if you would be interested in joining our Supporting Hoarding Behaviour Task and Finish Group - it would be great to have your experience and insight.  Thanks Beth (Staffordshire County Council)
