Plant your tree
1. Choose your spot: pick a sunny place in your garden with plenty of space. Leave about 2 metres clear on each side and avoid planting under other trees.
2. Dig the hole: dig a hole that's twice the width of the root plug and the same depth.
3. Planting: take the sapling out of its pot or cell carefully so you don’t damage the roots. Put it in the hole so the top of the root plug is level with the soil. Spread the roots out so they don’t wrap around the tree.
4. Fill the hole: put the soil back and press it down gently (don’t squash it too hard). Water well so the soil settles around the roots
5. Mulching: spread a layer of mulch (like leaves, straw or woodchip) around the base to keep moisture in and stop weeds. Top it up every couple of months.
6. Care: water regularly during dry weather and focus on deep watering at the base to encourage strong root development.
